VANN MUSIC has had a very exciting few months. They played a sold out Academy 2, released their EP ‘Electro Shock Dreams’, headlined a stage at Longitude, played a handful of other festivals and NME named you as one of the standouts from Electric Picnic! With a headline date announced for Whelan’s on Friday 1st of November their future looks even more exciting.

For anyone who has been living under a rock for the last year the band members (Aaron, Phil, Rob and Ross) describe themselves as a “…Dublin Electro band that formed a little over a year ago & have been gigging relentlessly since”

After a summer like they just had you would assume that the pressure of being in a successful band has started to set in. You would be wrong. The band are very honest about their position, “…We don’t feel any pressure at all,” they told Goldenplec, “we’re doing what we love!! We have found ourselves in a very fortunate position to be able to play all over the country as well as Ireland’s top festivals.”

For a new band to play festivals like Longitude and Electric Picnic it must feel like a dream come through?  “Yeah we certainly felt a sense of accomplishment & all round excitement, we’re such a new band that we find it a little bit surreal.”

Throughout their rise in the last 12 months VANN MUSIC have become very well known for putting on a memorable live show. Some acts find it difficult to get used to playing festivals as the set up is so different to and the stage is so much larger. But this was something that the band relished. “We really enjoyed bringing our thing to the bigger stages at the festivals this year. It really seemed to work. There’s no better feeling than watching people sing the words of your songs back to you.”

And, of course, the band got to see a few free shows too, which was a nice bonus. “David Byrne & St Vincent at the Electric Picnic was possibly one of the best shows we’ve seen. Hot Chip were sensational at Longitude and ASIWYFA were really ace at Castlepalooza, it was heavy.”

It would be remiss of us not to ask about their debut EP ‘Electro Shock Dreams’. The perfectly produced EP has an almost 80’s vibe to it and has been extremely well received by the public. “We recorded most of it in our studio, VMHQ, at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. We then got a guy called Richie Naughton in to mix & produce it in Windmill Lane. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for us but I think we drove Richie up the walls, as there were many long days and nights getting it right.

“The 80’s feel came from a long process of sitting down and writing mainly with synths in the studio. We’re big fans of the big expansive sound of M83 and we really wanted to push our sound as far as it could go with songs. We also listened to a lot of French House stuff like Alain Braxe, LifeLike and Fred Falke.”

With talk of a debut album in the future the band are extremely positive about the interesting times ahead, “… At the moment we’re constantly developing new ideas and songs. It has been pretty exciting to date. We want to make to an awesome debut album so it’s not something that we want to rush. Some new music is definitely on the way early next year. We started the writing process on a batch of new songs & they’re coming along nicely”

The headline show in Whelan’s on November 1st will also coincide with the release of the bands second single “Into The Night”. Fans of the band can expect a great night with the guys “planning to make this show really special.”
