Cork bands featured prominently in GoldenPlec's 'Plec Picks for 2015' and the trend of top class bands emerging from the city doesn't show signs of slowing down.

Hot on the heels of Elastic Sleep, The Altered Hours and Hags emerge Partisan Crowds. They've just dropped their debut single, Apartments. It feels like a song naturally fits in with the aforementioned promising guitar bands currently making waves from Cork. They capture the psychedelia of Tame Impala and Temples and cross it with the blissed-out coda of Deerhunter.

GoldenPlec caught up with Partisan Crowds Oisin Dineen ahead of their shows at Cork's newest festival the Quarter Block Party.

How did Partisan Crowds come about?

I started writing songs to the drum ideas my brother Ronan was coming up with last year. After a a few weeks of playing, it felt like we were getting a bit of a sound together so we asked a mutual friend of ours Ronan McCann to play bass for a gig in Cyprus avenue. Two Ronans in a band of 3 people took a bit of getting used to but McCann was great for beefing up our hollowed sound and brought a great energy. People seemed to really enjoy the gig so Partisan Crowds was born.

How did Partisan Crowds arrive at the sound for Apartments?

Apartments is a song we wrote more recently. I like how the verses are so calm and empty and then there's this wild jarring guitar thing going on later. The big parts were getting a good reaction live so we said we'd take a stab at recording it. Guitar solos can be dangerous because you can arrive at something unpalatable quite easily but I was confident that Chris knew where we were going with it and he didn't disappoint. The song existed live before anything so it was really a matter of recreation but we were able to play with textures and mood a lot in studio and I think we ended up with something weird enough for us all to like.

Is there a catalyst for the recent emergence of guitar Cork bands like The Altered Hours, Hags & Elastic Sleep and now yourselves?

Well there's a decent live scene in Cork and a lot of good people participating in that; be it musicians, organisers or whatever so that always helps. I'm always amazed by the amount of people in town that play in bands or multiple bands or whatever. It's definitely encouraging. There is some real quality here as well and some bands just command respect for their work ethic.

What's the plans for Partisan Crowds over 2015?

It's early doors for us and we write a lot of material so we are trying to get as much of these songs onto an EP as soon as we can. Each of our songs differ in mood so we were a little concerned about releasing one song in isolation as that would only give a snapshot of one aspect of our sound. We are pushing to get more songs down in the next few months and and get a release out as early as we can this year, while the songs are fresh.

Partisan Crowds play BDSM as part of the Quarter Block Party on Friday 6th Feb at 9pm. They also play an Alliance Promotions gig at The Crane Lane on Saturday 21st March.

Apartments is now available for streaming and download from bandcamp.
