Everything EverythingEverything Everything at The Academy on the 8th of October, 2013

It’s a return to Dublin for the Manchester-based four-piece, Everything Everything.  Following a summer of festivals and heavy touring on the back of their successful second album ‘Arc,’ Goldenplec venture to The Academy to see what they have on offer.

A pedantic, slow build-up opens the show with Undrowned – accompanied by a mood settling misty smoke. The drums and others finally join and the song’s end is accepted by warm applause. The band are quick to illustrate their credentials; oldy Qwerty Finger – a wacky, synth-heavy track with ska-like drum patterns by Michael Spearman, meanders somewhat coherently, and certainly has that progressive feel to it.  A violently brash bass drum assists the wonderfully imaginative bridge by guitarists  Jonathan Higgs and Alex Robertshaw.

Frontman, Higgs creates some magical moments with his unique, often acrobatic voice, especially for the unorthodox Torso Of The Week. It’s a bit like attempting to sing in tongue-twisters.

Commentators curse clearly imposed; the next few vocals from Higgs are well short of the mark set prior. The band have good spirit though, so too the crowd, and the foursome build confidence from the rousing acceptance. They expel quite a superb delivery of MY KZ, UR BF, from 2010’s album ‘Man Alive.’  The musicianship on display is quite gripping at times, with superb melodic value in the tracks.

Sadly, fan favourite Duet is performed as if the group are exhausted by it  – there is no shine at all and yet surprisingly the fans up front give as good as they’ve got. This fine performance by those in attendance clearly astonishes the band and singer Higgs, says with genuine surprise “I don’t know what’s wrong with you people but thank you for being so nice to us.”

The good mood lends well for the elegant rock tune Justice. Schoolin’ sees the band fall guilty of packing too much into a song – the melody gets lost somewhere along the way and they’re guilty of it in other tracks too.

The foursome from Tynedale absolutely nail Kemosabe, their biggest hit to-date. They follow it up with The Peaks, a slow, cutely atmospheric tune.  It fades with a beautiful numbing combination of synth, gentle guitars and siren-like vocals from Higgs. If you close your eyes it sounds as if a ship’s untimely fate is tragically nearing.

Time for the poppy Cough Cough to round things off ans while the show was filled with mostly golden moments and the band received by their audience incredibly well, Everything Everything are not quite the complete package yet. In saying that, there’s no doubts here that with another album in the locker, they’ll surpass their current capacity.
