Welcome to this week’s Plec Picks and it’s business as usual after last week’s Halloween Special.

Incase you’ve never experienced The Plec Picks (listen to older playlists here) or are a little confused about what The Plec Picks are, the GP team jot down what their most listened to songs of the week are and we make a lovely playlist of all the songs for everyone to enjoy. It’s interesting to hear what everyone’s listening to and it’s a chance to cast your ears on something different and you might even discover some tastey new music! As there’s a lot of different tastes in the mix here, every song isn’t going to be to everyone’s liking so feel free to skip to the next song if there’s something that doesn’t float your boat.

Click play once (it’s a playlist) and it’ll cycle through all the videos / songs (so you can just leave the tab open and keep listening).

If you come across something you like, click the social media icons beside the artist and throw them a like/follow and explore what more the artist has to offer.

As always, we hope you enjoy this week’s offerings and be sure to let us know what you’re listening to and you might make it into next week’s edition!

Bon Iver // Holocene (Chosen by @justlearyG)

DIIV // Doused (Chosen by Alessio Michelini)

Something new that sounds like something from the old days and at the same time it doesn’t sound like a cut and paste work.

The Rolling Stones // Doom And Gloom (Chosen by Kieran Frost)

Heard this on the radio during the week and though, ah, Stones, great….then, realised it was new!

A worrying number of bands loose steam after their second album, the stones are still releasing new material, that sounds fresh, after 50 years.

The Rembrandts // I’ll Be There For You (Chosen by Liam Doyle)

I was thinking about this song a lot this week because I realised that The Rembrandts must get royalties every time an episode of Friends is aired. That’s an unfathomable amount of money!

Robyn // Cry When You Get Older (Chosen by Aisling O’Brien)

I was meant to go to London and see Robyn last week, sadly I couldn’t due to work so I spent my time feeling sorry for myself listening to her. Not quite the same but lots of fantastic tracks.

Husker Du // Diane (Chosen by Sean Conroy)

Arguably the creepiest song ever recorded, Diane is the story of the murder of Diane Edwards by mass-murderer Joe Ture. It’s essential listening – rarely will you hear a song deal with murder so candidly and with real quotes from the event.

The damned thing will stay rattling around your head like a horrid scene all day; You’ll never feel right humming this to yourself. But it’s a phenomenal piece of work and the penultimate track on the sublime Metal Circus.

Radioactive Grandma// Robot Song (Chosen by Claire Kane)

This is a different kind of song from a great Cavan based band. Their album is available to buy now and although I haven’t had a listen yet, if this is anything to go by it will be a real treat to the ears.

Kevin Devine// Brothers Blood (Chosen by Greg Synnott)

Probably one of the most understated and one of my most overplayed artists, I play his records constantly, he tends to play a lot of acoustic shows and they are even more impressive than this. Note, his Live Dublin video on Youtube of this track.

Johnny Cash// Thunderball (Chosen by Yan Bourke)

Ok, I’m cheating a little because rather than listening to this all week, I JUST found out about it. But seriously, Johnny Cash recorded a version of the theme song for Thunderball that was actually in the running, but wasn’t used, and IT SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE WHAT YOU’RE THINKING RIGHT NOW. I don’t know what he was thinking, this would have been a terrible Bond theme, but for what it is, it’s actually pretty good.

SOAK// Sea Creatures (Chosen by Niall QLiathróid Ó Cíosóig)

Alt-J// Something Good (Chosen by Jonathan Klein)

These guys won the mercury prize recently for having an album jam-packed with songs like this. The vocals are so soothing, and the swirling piano is awesome. Great song

Sorcha Richardson// Nicki (Chosen by Niall Swan)

A beautiful song written using the journal of of Nicki Muller, who sadly passed away in October, having suffered with brain cancer.

Robbie Williams// Not Like The Others (Chosen by Aidan Cuffe)

Robbie Williams new album Take The Crown came out this week and one of my favourite tracks on the album is Not Like The Others, mostly because it’s one of the tracks that have the energy and passion of Robbie gold.

Journeyman// Boy (Chosen by Darragh Faughey)

Delicate mixture of the freshest folk and pop. This one is straight from the oven!

The Replacements// Bastards Of Young (Chosen by Sean Cullivan)

The Replacements were one of many great underground bands that made the 80’s much better musically than the cliché of it being terrible suggests.

The Replacements were simply four young guys who rocked out with their hearts on their sleeves. Initially they played loose, chaotic and freewheeling hardcore, but they gradually mellowed into a seminal alternative rock group.

My Plec Pick, Bastards of Young is a triumphant and anthemic blast at growing up into conformity and a boring existence. It‚Äôs classic Replacements and catches them at a crossroads between maturity and youthful abandon. In particular the lyric “Dreams unfulfilled/Graduate unskilled” really resonates with me as part of a generation coming of age in hard times.

FarOff // Mash Together (Chosen by @DarraghDoyle)

Lushlife// Hale-Bopp Was The Bedoiuns (Chosen by Kevin Donnellan)

Apart from the most esoteric hip-hop song title ever this perfectly showcases Lushlife, a Philadelphia rapper who is one of the more thoughtful, and underrated, around at the moment.

Windings// This Is A Conversation (Chosen by Justin McDaid)

Three albums in Windings have nailed it with one of the best of the year. Here’s one of the many crackers on it

Alt-J// Breezeblocks (Chosen by Mark Earley)

Got the album last week having never heard a song and this one is my favourite. Simple really.

Tame Impala// Elephant (Chosen by Claire Beck)

The first single from their kick arse new album, Lonerism. Catchy as all hell. Enjoy!

Bastille// Flaws (Chosen by Siún Aherne)
