Playlist Me!

What’s in there?

1) The Jezabels – Endless Summer (Chosen by Debbie Hickey)

I’ve been listening to this wonderful four-piece from sydney on repeat ever since electric picnic, It was my first time seeing, hearing and photographing them. They’re amazing live and pretty much every song is unreal! I can’t wait to hear more from them :)

2) John Forte – Breaking of A Man (Chosen by Ros Madigan)

It’s a really special song that details the story of a man who was pardoned by George Bush and let out of jail early. Fascinating man who produced ‘The Score’ by The Fugees and then went to jail for drug possession. Involve yourself in the lyrics and let John Forte impress you today.

3) Aeroplane – We Can’t Fly (Chosen by Claire Beck)

He played The Sugar Club Friday night and made us wait till the second last song for We Can’t Fly, then for the very last song he FINALLY dropped Paris, what everyone had been waiting all night. What a tease, but yes it was worth the wait!

4) The Redneck Manifesto – Bring Your Own Blood (Chosen by Alice Goodwin)

I rediscovered this album on my ipod this week, and I’d definitely forgotten how good the entire thing is. This track’s chilled, rhythmic, melodic, and just so good for wandering around town.

5) Bluetones – Sleazy Bed Track (Chosen by Sean Noone)

I watched Scott Pilgrim (again) recently. It’s got such a great soundtrack, but this is the stand out for me. It’s such a sexy track and one from a really underrated Britpop band.

6) dEUS – Instant Street (Chosen by Kevin Donnellan)

One of my favourite songs ever despite the first few minutes being pedestrian enough. It’s all about the extended finish. Of course if every song ended on a massive crescendo the effect would be lost. But listening to this makes – for the last three minutes at least – most other songs seem boring in comparison.

7) Last Days Of 1984 – Rivers Edge (Chosen by Stephen Byrne)

Wake Up The Waves is one of my top ten Irish albums of the year and Rivers Edge is one song that keeps me coming back for more on a regular basis.

8) Scissor Sisters – Comfortably Numb (Chosen by Aisling O’Brien)

An oldie but a goodie, heading to Scissor Sisters this week so they’re on my playlist. They re-arranged this Pink Floyd classic and injected some disco in to it to create the most successful Pink Floyd cover ever. Personally I, controversially, prefer this version to the original.

9) Sive – Hide and Seek (Chosen by Justin Mc Daid)

This closing number from Sive’s ‘We Are Moving’ is one of the most affecting and downright beautiful Irish releases of 2012. It’s released as a single on October 5th, grab it for yisser mots.

10) Elbow – One Day Like This (Chosen by Claire Kane)

Ever have one of those weeks were the only thing that will comfort you is Guy Garvey’s voice? Surely it can’t just be me. This is my ultimate “happy song” and I’ve needed this week- trust me if you’re feel a bit down in the dumps, throw this song, maximise the volume and sing it like you mean it; it’s the best remedy.

11) SR 71 – Right Now (Chosen by Aidan Cuffe)

This is an old favourite of mine. Upbeat, catchy punk rock song that made many a running playlist when keeping fit. Recently exploring old playlists made me want to share this on since SR 71 never caught on over this side of the Atlantic.

12) The Killers – Runaways (Chosen by Sean Smyth)

I heard this a few times before seeing them at EP. When they played it, I found my self singing it back to them almost word for word. It was then I realised then that it was great! Felt like an old Killers song.

And I’ve been giving their album a few spins this week. It’s fairly decent. “Flesh and Bone” is a great tune too!

13) Josh Osho – Jesus Walks (Kanye West cover) (Chosen by Mark Earley)

Saw him in the Market Bar for Arthurs Day. Smooth voice, emotive performer and this videos simple and effective. Im also a sucker for the looping.

14) Muse – Time Is Running Out (Chosen by Deirdre Harrison)

Having heard a lot of Muse’s new stuff this week I’ve been trying to pretend it doesn’t exist and just remember they how they used to be. Hard to believe its the same band!

15) Nine IX Lives – Drag The Lake (Chosen by Niall Swan)

After reminiscing about my first time seeing Heathers live I realised that I actually went to see this band play that day and the girls were supporting them. The ‘Irish Green Day’ should have gone on to much bigger things.

16) Billie Holiday – You’d Better Go Now (Chosen by Anna Job)

I recently rediscovered The Complete Billie Holiday On Verve 1945-1959 collection; an album my uncle gave me years ago. If you’re a fan of Ms Holiday it’s certainly worth a listen. ‘You’d Better Go Now’, recorded in Carnegie Hall in 1947, is a live track of particular note. Between the keys tinkling in the background and her sweet as honey voice, it’ll knock your socks off.

17) You Kiss by the Book – Railroad at the end of town (Chosen by Niall Healy)

Simple enough alt-country with no pretensions. Lovely hurling.

18) ExitMusic – Passage (Chosen by David Dooley)

Sounds like Beach House’s older, more world weary sibling who’s seen some unpleasant things. Exitmusic were chosen for this week’s Plec Pics in anticipation of their upcoming Whelans show.
