Goldenplec versus State took place on Friday 13th May in The Mercantile on Dame Street. This really was an event that built to a climax. Billed on the night were Created By Comets, Alice Kona Band and Retarded Cop.

Created By Comets I had only heard an EP of the day before the gig so actually expected to like them. They are a funky rock style act kind of akin to RHCP with a brass section. The music is tight and fun and it’s a shame more people hadn’t filtered in to catch them. Alice Kona band came all the way down from Belfast to fire out their high energy Garage rock. They did seem to get a mixed reaction, not personally my favourite music but I watched the whole set. There were more people for them than Created by Comets and those who were watching did look impressed so a marmite band that seems to have those who enjoyed their music and those who went outside for a smoke and a quiet drink. Appealing to everyone is very much not their aim I would guess. Whilst not my type of music I did enjoy that they were tight and had a good stage presence.

Next up was the headliner Retarded Cop who opened by saying “You have the right to remain retarded” before launching into their high energy set. The place absolutely packed to the rafters for their set and it was difficult to even stand. This made it even better as everyone bopped along to their unusual stylings which were an absolute crowd pleaser. Topping off the “Clash of the music website Titans” night was Le Tissier with a DJ/VJ set which most of the Retarded Cop crowd stayed around for to dance the night away.

Goldenplec has declared victory on this night, however we have no fear that these two entities will meet again in the near future.
