The Crayon Set are a Dublin based indie pop act who with their wide variety of instruments create music that is so infectious you will be dancing before you realise you’ve gotten out of your chair. Instruments include oboe, double bass, banjo, wurlitzer, violin, cavaquinho, trumpet and flute. The released their self titled EP this month and it’s a joy to listen to.

Fifteen seconds into the first track “Wonderland” off the Crayon Set’s new E.P I was already smiling. It’s a very Indie tune with that typical bright sounding melody you would hear on The Cure’s “In Between days”. When the vocals come in im reminded of the Future Kings of Spain, who not so long ago were doing a tour of Japan and opening the final day of Oxegen back in 2009. The Crayon Set could well be stepping up to that Mark by the end of 2012.

The vocals shift to female for “No 1 fan”. Again its bright and cheesy with some “ohhh ahhhh woooh ahhhs” and brass instruments but it’s so damn catchy. The guitar melodies in the chorus are lovely arpeggios. Absolutely made for TV bed music.

“K+J=0” goes a bit softer with a floor tom rhythm and mixing male and female vocals throughout.”I wanted you” closes the E.P and is again a softer version of the style that I was shown on two opening tracks that greeted me at the start.

Don’t be surprised to see the Crayon set’s music on the next “Discover Ireland” ad. Its bright and cheery and very melodic. The type of music we could all do with these days.
