Kate Nash had an unsurprisingly quirky set design for her gig in the Academy last Sunday. Pillows and bubbles used to represent clouds, lightning bolts and umbrella, possibly used to mirror her darker image with her new album My Best Friend Is You. Clad in an interesting body suit and a cape she began the evening with a guitar string breaking which is bound to be frustrating yet she launched in to I Just Want You More. She told the crowd that it was “nice to be back and see some familiar faces” which led to cheers from the very enthusiastic front row.

Over the next few songs Kate took to her keyboard which gave the illusion that she was sitting in a cloud. She performed a good mix of old and new songs Kiss That Grrrl, Mouthwash, Do-Wah-Doo and The Skeleton Song.

Take Me To A Higher Plane was next. Kate told the packed Academy that “I’m having some technical difficulties, don’t know why, apologies”. She then played another new one Don’t You Wanna Share The Guilt. There was a very enthusiastic fan beside me singing/shouting Dickhead and Mariella to her blushing boyfriend, this may have been excusable if there had been a bar open, but funny all the same. Later On?

The lights went down and Kate began Mansion Song, which begins with a poem that is slightly shocking and she lets some things off her chest. The crowd seemed impressed and she just said a simple “Thank You”
On a lighter note, she informed the crowd the next was a sing a long song, R&B Side, instructing the audience to sing the chorus “Why D’ya Have To Be Such a Wanker”. Funnily enough when she finished a male fan tried his damnedest to get her to sing a song and was told “I’m not gonna sing that song”, when he still wouldn’t back down, Kate sang the previous songs chorus. After a few newer songs, the audience requested more songs which led to Foundations. With that Kate said her Thank You’s, introduced the band and left the stage.

After a few minutes of feet stomping, Kate returned to the stage minus the cape and bass player. She played Merry Happy and what seemed to be the fan favorite of the night Birds.
