Odd Morris, one of our Plec Picks this year, are releasing their third single Cold Water on 29th January. Recorded by Mark Healy and Ciarán McCarthy (who also handled mixing duties) at The Sound Yard, it’s a deceptively subdued affair propelled by motoric drums, a driving bassline and shimmering guitar arpeggios.

Frontman Daragh Griffin describes the song’s first half as “a jab at myself for allowing myself to let my guard down.”

Elaborating on the lyrical themes, he says: ”It’s essentially me taking the piss a bit, realising my exhausted perspective on romance. The second half is me recognising the contrary to that perspective, embracing the beauty of letting one’s guard down. I just tried to explain what that felt like, and to me it was a shock to the system, like how people suddenly gasp in shock when they hit cold water.”

The accompanying music video was directed and edited by Daragh with Jack Martin, who filmed it in and around Dublin’s city centre. It depicts a day in the life of its central character, with a sense that there is a lingering thought in the back of his mind.

“It’s all very close and domestic in ways, the male actor is my flatmate and parts are filmed in my room. Other parts are filmed on bus routes that we all took as young kids. Being from Swords in North County Dublin, a trip into the city was butterfly-feeling inducing as a toddler, and living there now, I often get that feeling as I turn the corner on Hill Street from Gardener Place.”
