Maynooth folk collective Hatchlings are about to release their new EP, ‘Gay Hymns’ and we are fortunate enough to be able to showcase the lead single from it Choir in The Belly.

It’s a departure from the heavy sounds of their first release and sees the band exploring jazz and folk elements. The sonic adventure is paralleled by the narratives explored in Hatchling’s lyrics.

The first taste of ‘Gay Hymns’ will be released on March 15th.

‘Choir in the Belly’ was written by Monaghan native Jamie Bishop in the small hours of the morning in a back garden, while taking a breather from a party.  ‘Gay Hymns’ is a much sweeter, delicate journey than its predecessor and ‘Choir in the Belly’ lives very peacefully between these songs.

With minimal instrumentation, three part harmonies and several key changes, Hatchlings are both calm and adventurous. The band are set to tour in celebration of this release in April and May.

As part of this tour Hatchlings are playing in the intimate setting of the Vintage Room of The Workman’s Club on March 15th, with support from the wonderful Baby Witch.

If you’ve seen Hatchlings live you’ll be aware of how polished they are and how engaging a front man Jamie Bishop is, and if you haven’t, well the upcoming tour is a good a a chance as any to get acquainted.
