Overhead, The Albatross have kept fans waiting for five years (and counting) for the release of their debut album. Will it ever see the day of light - who knows? They tell us it’s coming, but they’ve fibbed to us before.

One thing is for certain though, it’s become the Irish ‘Chinese Democracy’ in terms of build-up. Let us hope its final delivery isn’t as flaccid as Guns ‘N’ Roses'.

At least Irish fans of the band have had a considerable amount of live shows to feed upon while they wait for the album’s final delivery. Imagine then, being an Overhead, The Albatross fan living outside of Ireland. Even more, imagine living further afield than Europe.

It becomes a more difficult proposition with every step doesn’t it? Then imagine being an Overhead, The Albatross fan from Taiwan. Your hopes of ever seeing the band live are currently non-existent.

(Check out their brand new video and single here).

However, one group of fans in Taiwan have circumnavigated this geographical problem and conjured up a slice of the Overhead live experience for themselves by covering their music.

Formed in 2012, Deadweight Loss or DWL for short are a four-piece band from Taiwan who play post-rock, post-metal music and blackgaze.

We caught up with DWL to discover how they became fans of Overhead, The Albatross
and why they chose to cover the band.

How does someone in Taiwan discover Overhead, The Albatross?

“It was a rainy day, and I was at one of my favourite cafés. The café usually plays folk music, but that night, they played Overhead, The Albatross’ Pigonometry. I never heard it before, so I looked it up in SoundHound and found the band’s name. That was the first time I’ve ever heard of Overhead, The Albatross.

What is it about them that you love so much?

Almost at once, I fell in love with their songs. They are different from the usual post-rock songs. The rhythms are always changing and never boring. The drums are delicate and fine-tuned, and I love the way they bring the emotions of the listener up and down.

Why did you pick that Overhead song to play live?

“My band, DWL, has been around for one year. Last semester, our bassist went to Sweden as an exchange student, and when she came back, we found it hard to pick up our musical understanding with each other straight away. We decided to cover a song from a band we all love, and the answer is definitely Overhead.

Because we only have four band members, and we don’t have a synth, we modified the song a little bit so that we can express it in our way.”

If you could send a message to the band what would it be?

“Well… maybe something like: 'Hey we really love your music! When are you going to come to Taiwan?'”

How excited are you about Overhead’s first album almost being ready?

“We’ve been listening to their music since Mr. Dog, which was in 2011. And it is suddenly 2015! We have been waiting for so long, and we can’t wait to hear it!

We know exactly how they feel!
