Slackers' Symphony have been together as a band in one form or another for a few years now, yet it's only lately that they have managed to settle on a stable line up and start to crank out some music.

They have a new single 'Outside' which GoldenPlec are delighted to be able to première.

Slackers' Symphony lead singer Ed Grannell spoke to GoldenPlec on why it has taken until now for his band to finally build up some momentum and how the band came to be.

Though originally from Cork, Ed said "my brother James and I moved to Dublin from Cork to form a band because this where we assumed it was all happening."

In time honoured tradition it was a case putting an ad out there for potential band members and see who replied.

"We started out knowing no one so we just jammed with people who answered our ads on-line. So the first two years of the band was like that until we met Brian (the drummer) who was the first guy who clicked with us musically, who then introduced us to Nathan and Marcin."

Grannell admits though he's been writing music for quite a while and that it's only "since Knockanstockan 2013 we've really been a band."

Following Knockanstockan there was a burst of activity for Slackers' Symphony to play as much as possible "we played as many gigs as we could for about a year and then over the past year we've been focusing more on the songs and our sound. It’s only now that we’re releasing our songs from two years ago so we’re well behind on our output but that also means there’s a lot more to come".

A casual glance at Slackers' Symphony collective influences is a long read zig zagging across genres and eras. It's also backed up when you listen to their music. It's not beholden to any specific style and Grannell agrees with that and he elaborated further on this point "At our last gig a guy came up to me and told me our set was like a musically journey from the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s, which would be the time frame of a lot of those influences.

"What we do is approach each song individually and that’s where we draw upon all our influences. On the other hand though, all those bands have guitars, bass, drums, keys and vox and all operate within the spectrum of Rock, usually up tempo, two and the four on the snare, catchy choruses, which is how we describe ourselves, a Rock band."

New single 'Outside' is a propulsive song with an urgent section punctuated with flourishes of swift fret work. Grannell explained that it 'Outside' is the "antithesis" of previous single 'Episode In Denial' which "was written while I was on a diet of Shakespeare and Hermin Melville".

Grannell when onto explain that ‘Outside’ "is about someone waiting impatiently at hatch 29 in the dole office on Kings Inn Street while mishearing lyrics by the Doors to put it very loosely. Musically it was born out of a need for the band to get a crowd dancing while we were gigging round Ireland."

The accompanying video for 'Outside' is the brainchild of Director Paudie Baggott though Grannell admitted "it was filmed in my gaff and is about one of those impromptu parties that occur after the pub that’s gone on way too long with a peculiar mix of people intoxicated to varying degrees still trying to get the most out of the night, while the band try perform to them, also intoxicated to varying degrees."
