del the funkyA Shakespearian schizophrenic, a wild word-smith, a thousand different people shouting a thousand different things from a well-lit spaceship above your house. Who is this? You’re listening to Del The Funky Homosapian of course.  Back with a free-to-download L.P ‘Iller Than Most’, Del’s words are sharp and as bizarrely eloquent as ever. Chattered poetry and a host of Del’s signature strange voices sit incongruously on a pile of broken machine samples, all dying beeps and distorted clangs right the way through.

The album crashes to the planet earth with Leader and a long list of harsh torturous demands has never sounded so good. The industrial backing track is less of a part of the song as much as it is a vehicle for The funky Homosapian’s extra-terrestrial demands. The sound of a taser stunning those less than ‘legit’ adds to the dystopian ‘audio stage play’ vibe that Del creates. Leader comes out strong with a pared back chorus, threatening and catchy.

Delta Time and Militant feature as the other highlights on the first half of the album, the same machine like tracks run like a conveyor-belt breaking down, then starting back up carrying stringed sentences of lyrical prose at breakneck speeds. The minimalistic backing grates pretty harshly though and could have you wondering “are the lines so good they could do without this racket’” with lines such as “juxtaposed Hoes, as stupid dough, more so” featuring on Delta Time.

Militant features the same self-appraising lyrics over a smoother, but still dark backing track “what I spit is the tits it aint the shit”. Only in 10 Paces do we hear a track which rivals the lyrical acrobatics of the songs. The word-smith terrorist however decides against taking the song in any way seriously and it sounds like a version of the Matrix films re-filmed with an angry aged Bill Murray. But, as you guessed, that’s still fantastic.

Sadly however, that’s pretty much it. There’s a few stand out tracks which will have you re-listening to check if you haven’t totally de-engaged with reality, and some which, far from being terrible, stand pretty average beside their more interesting counterparts. That said, the L.P is free, the lyrics are slick and solid so why not give a listen to the best man to put words together since ‘to be’ met ‘not to be’.
