FreeTheUniverseCoverIf you’ve ever wanted an album that will help you lose your mind and then quietly give it back to you remodelled and suddenly loving heavy, dub-inspired music then go out and pick yourself up a copy of Major Lazer’s new album ‘Free The Universe’. It’s an education.

With more ‘feats’ than a caterpillar, the album pulls from the talents of a surprising number of famous has-been musicians and new-school darlings. Starring, in no-particular order, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Wyclef Jean, Bruno Mars, Santigold, Peaches, and Mr. Bombastik himself Shaggy, you’ll feel like you’re in some sort of strange time machine that brings you to the ’90s, ’00s, and present day all at once.

And did we mention that Ms. Dynamite is on this album as well? Well she is. Track 10, Sweat, and its’ not entirely awful either. Apparently jail doesn’t hurt your musical talents that much, after all.

Taken as a whole, the album is a weird mix of dub-step, dancehall, reggae, and straight up club music. It’s not that easy to listen to on headphones either because most of the album is meant for darkened underground nightclubs. Goldenplec even had to rent out a club to review it properly in its natural habitat so make no mistake; this album is coming to a dance floor near you soon. In fact, it’s probably already there.

Of course, it’s not all banging tunes and wobbling dubs, there are some great pure electronic songs on this album. One of best singles of last year, Get Free, is present as is Ezra Koenig’s fantastic cameo on Jessica. But the album opener You’re No Good featuring Santigold is almost more perfect than ‘Get Free’ and we’d be very surprised if that song doesn’t go the whole way. Just try and ignore the gunshots and violent screams within the first 15 seconds.

Basically this album may make you reconsider what constitutes dramatically powerful music. It’s a revelation. And eventually you’ll be able to listen to it waking up, going to sleep, walking to work, and at 3:30 on a Saturday night. It’ll take over your life so you’d better get listening to it.
