Whelans LogoIt has been mooted for a while and now it will be an actuality in 2014. Whelan’s will be opening up a new record shop to be a great way for bands to have an outlet for their physical products while also helping those who seek harder to find CDs somewhere to check first.

They are also planning to celebrate turning 25 with some very special gigs where they will see some of the biggest and best bands to have played Whelan’s over the 25 years. They have had some phenomenal acts over the years and you can expect to see some of these announced for the venue this year.

Also plotted is a competition competition where they will be asking members of the public to submit photos they took at gigs in Whelan’s over the years. The public will vote for the best picture and those photos will be placed in an exhibition and on Whelans25.com, which was established to celebrate the big birthday.

“Back in 1989, the old Bourke’s pub was completely refurbished, extended and reopened as Whelans. However, a public house existed here as far back as 1772 with the premises changing hands many times throughout this period. The first gig ever was organised by the Kevin Street SU Ents Officer at the time Lisa Tinley and the band featured was the Subterraneans.”
