Welcome to this week’s installment of ”The Plec Picks: What we’re listening to” here on GoldenPlec (older ones). It’s a playlist of songs we’ve individually been listening to this week. We try to encourage actually posting what we’re listening to rather than posting tunes that we think will make us cool and hip.

It’s a chance to cast your ears on something different and perhaps discover new music! You’re guaranteed a few decent tunes anyway!

Click play once (it’s a playlist) and it’ll cycle through all the videos / songs (so you can just leave the tab open and keep listening) and if you come across something that doesn’t float your boat, just skip it. BOOM!

If you come across something you like, click the video and explore what more the artist has to offer.

Enjoy this week’s offerings and be sure to let us know what you’re listening to and you might make it into next week’s edition!

Playlist Me!

What’s in there?

1) We are Scientists – Rules Don’t Stop Me (Chosen by Sean Smyth)

I listened to We Are Scientists for the first time about 2 years ago and I didn’t like them. Then, when they played Camden Crawl, a few of my friends posted their songs on their wall in excitement. I gave them another go and loved them. It was odd. What a difference two years makes, eh?

2) Nikki Lane – Gone, Gone, Gone (Chosen by Kevin Donnellan)

True story; recently, in a bar in Dallas, I heard a man perform a song called “Have You Been Fucking Truckers Again?” And that, ridiculously, was a high point in my relationship with Country music. Until Nikki Lane opened the door to the barn a little further. She’s cool AND she’s country. Think I’m in love.

3) Rhye – Open (Chosen by Claire Beck)

Beautiful Sade-esque vocals singing chillingly tender lyrics over a hooky melody. GORGEOUS.

4) Buraka Som Sistema – Tira o Pe (Chosen by Luis Faustino)

It’s the addictive beat and vibe that makes me replay this track so much.
The track has been getting massive reviews in media worldwide and is a dance-floor bomb.
Buraka Som Sistema are a huge success worldwide and are the fathers of a new genre, the Electronic Kuduro.
Other famous tracks are Hangover and We Stay Up All Night.

5) Blood Diamonds feat. Grimes – Phone Sex (Chosen by David Dooley)

After exhausting Grimes debut album any new material featuring the excitable Canadian is more than welcome.

6) Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers (Chosen by Liam Doyle)

The chorus of this song shares the same contagiousness as yawning. This woman can do no wrong.

7) PSY – Gangnam Style (Chosen by Deirdre Harrison)

This has been the song I keep hearing this week, not entirely by choice though. Gangnam Style is just becoming impossible to escape and I’m not 100% I want to escape it. I mean, this song should make no sense and should be hated yet for some reason I love it. Now can someone teach me the dance please?

8) Mika – We Are Golden (Chosen by Alice Goodwin)

I have gotten Mika fever this week. Whether it’s the run up to Arthur’s Day, or my love of the man in general, his entire back catalogue has been on a loop. This is just such a beautifully catchy tune, and the video’s amazing. Can you go wrong with that combination?

9) At The Drive-In – Aecarsenal (Chosen by justin mcdaid)

they were on the best of Jools on friday, they’re an amazing punk band and Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group is playing Dublin October 2nd, get in there

10) Machine Gun Baby – My Skin (Chosen by Claire Kane)

I’ve been listening to the band’s upcoming live CD all week and this song really stands out. It reminds me of Kings of Leon when they were good and had personality.

11) Joni Mitchell – California (Chosen by Ros Madigan)

I have recently been reviewing the new Roisin O album and one of the songs reminded me of Joni Mitchell which set me off on a 3 day Jon Mitchell binge. Possibly one of the greatest songwriters and voices of her generation. Perfection.

12) The Knife – Heartbeats (Chosen by Yan Bourke)

There’s something about The Knife’s seminal album Silent Shout that only really makes sense in the cold. I still don’t have the rest of their earlier album, Deep Cuts, but this song has a warmer feel to it that’s kind of perfect for the kind of weather we had this week.

13) Villagers – The Waves (Chosen by Stephen Byrne)

Following Conor O’Brien’s stunning solo performance in Elastic Witch on Saturday I just had to go home and put this song straight on.

14) Snow Patrol – Get Balsamic Vinegar… Quick You Fool! (Chosen by Niall Swan)

This is the Snow Patrol I fell in love with all those years back. I listen to it in hope that they’ll one day make an album like this again.

15) The Cure v Robyn – Close To Konichiwa Bitches (Chosen by Sean Noone)

It been playing every day before a show I was working on at the Absolut Fringe. It does what the best mash-ups do: takes two average enough songs (that’s right, Cure fans, I’m ‘that guy’) and creates something much better than the sum of the parts involved. As the song says, see you next Tuesday.

16) One Direction – Live While We’re Young (Chosen by Aisling O’Brien)

An infectious repetitive chorus & five lads having the craic on an extremely posh camping trip? It can only be One Direction’s latest single & video. They’ve stuck to the same winning formula of their debut, and why shouldn’t they when the cheeky chappys have already managed to secure the number one spot with their unreleased second album, as eager fans pre-ordered it a few weeks ago.

17) Warren G feat Nate Dogg – Regulate  (Chosen by Mark Earley)

Why? Because Nate Dogg has the best voice ever. And we sang it at the weekend at a wedding and totally ruined it so its nice to listen to it without us singing.
