Welcome to week 2 (Last Week’s) of “The Plec Picks: What we’re listening to” here on GoldenPlec. It’s a list of songs that we’ve been listening to this week. Trying to be cool or hip is not allowed so even if it’s a cheesy pop song and it’s been in one of our heads this week, it’s included!
It’s a chance to cast your ears on something different and maybe discover new music! What’s to lose?

What’s in there?
1) Saint Motel – Puzzle Pieces (Chosen by Vanessa Monaghan)
I just can’t get enough of these guys, LA based Saint Motel. This is a beautifully upbeat track from their debut Voyeur which I have on constant rotation. Perfect for this week’s sunny days!
2) Animal Collective – Today’s Supernatural (Chosen by Seán Noone)
It’s loud. It’s brash. It’s weird (and so is that freaky-ass video!). It’s amazing.
One of several stand-outs from Animal Collective’s new album; this song blew me away the first time I heard it. It’s impact on me hasn’t diminished one bit since.
Excuse me, while I play it again.
3) Neon Wolf – All Of It’s Yours (Chosen By Deirdre Harrison)
Insanely catchy with lots of cowbell, there really isn’t anything to dislike about this song or indeed the entire EP ‘Love Lost In Design’. Perfect for listening to as the summer is coming to a close in an attempt to hold onto that happy festival feeling. If these guys aren’t huge by this time next year I’ll eat my hat!
4) Kid Karate – Two Times (Chosen by Stephen Byrne)
Because I’ve been waiting for their debut album to drop for two years now and this single brings me tantalizingly close to that moment.
5) Tiger Love – Summer Rain (Chosen by David Dooley)
If you ignore the video and the cringe-inducing attempts to be retro (from the © 1996 in their Youtube description and the appearance of a Talkboy) it’s a great synth-drenched, summer singalong.
6) Joe Jackson – Different For Girls (Chosen by Liam Doyle)
A simple guitar line, heart wrenching lyrics, and a huge dramatic chorus. What’s not to like?
7) Rayko/Em Vee – All Around The WatchTower (Chosen by Mark Earley)
Heard this at Body n Soul and couldn’t dig it up anywhere in the weeks following. A mate of mine played it at the Picnic and I got the link and have had it on loop since. Really nice remix to start the weekend!
8) HelloGoodbye – Here (In Your Arms) (Chosen by Niall Swan)
I’ve been listening to Heathers’ new album all week and this song just happens to be the next alphabetically in my iTunes library. How it got there I’m not really sure but it’s not so bad after umpteen listens…
9) More Than Conquerors – When The Well Runs Dry (Chosen by Nicola Byrne)
The latest track from the Belfast lads has gotten a fair few spins from me this week. After wearing down their Boots and Bones EP, this single is a well overdue preview of the upcoming debut album. True to form, this cathartic stomper is a catchy indication of great things to come.
10) Stretch – Why Did You do It (Chosen by Luke Mulligan)
For me sunny Irish days usually mean a few different things: the canal, beers and my music taste being pushed in a funky direction. In this case I rarely look further than the Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Soundtrack, this is my pick of the bunch.
11) Grizzly Bear, The Knife (chosen by Alice Goodwin)
Great tune, great video, a nice easy listen for enjoying the only bit of sunshine 2012 is probably going to get. How could you go wrong?
12) Paul Banks – The Base (Chosen by Greg Synnott)
I looked past Interpol as just “one of those bands” for such a long time until I recently moved in with one of my friends who has been playing them constantly and from this I have been introduced further to the lead singer, Paul Banks, solo works of Julian Plenti and now his latest work under his real moniker. All I can say is, don’t let this slip by the way I did.
12) Think Of Me – Drunken Boat (Chosen by Justin McDaid)
Someone asked what the best Irish album of the year so far is during the week. For me ‘Tie The Knots’ is still leading the pack. Think Of Me is my favourite song off it – here it is stripped down.
13) Childish Gambino – Freaks And Geeks (Chosen by Sean Smyth)
A friend recommended Childish Gambino to me a few days after I had been at Kanye West and Jay-Z and Childish Gambino’s gig was coming up in a few weeks. So I gave his album “Camp” a whirl and I loved it. It’s been one of my most played albums for the past few months and I’ve really gotten back into it this week. Shame he had to cancel his gig but I’ll be there with bells on when he returns!
14) Kimbra – Cameo Lover (Chosen by Aisling O’Brien)
Having foolishly overlooked Kimbra on ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, I didn’t know what to expect when going to check her out at Electric Picnic. She has some seriously catchy tunes and a fantastic style. New Zealand’s answer to Robyn, if you ask me. This will be stuck in your head for days!
15) Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchastra – Do it with a rockstar (Chosen by Claire Kane)
Amanda Palmer, put simply, is a fantastic singer and songwriter and her entire new album is something to sing about but for some reason this song just seems to stick out, maybe it’s down the dirty-rock feel to it, maybe it’s because it’s so UN-dresden dolls but it is definitely worth a repeat or 12.
