U2 have been the main benefactors to a new national music education programme whose Cork City branch was launched last Tuesday.

Music Generation provides children up to the age of 18 with wider access to music tuition, and the new scheme has been tied in to other existing community-based education providers that are ongoing in the Cork area. U2’s donation, together with The Ireland Funds, totalled €7 million which represents the largest ever single philanthropic donation in the history of the state.

The first major Music Generation event will take place on November 17th in Cork’s Millenium Hall and will feature a collaboration between the Ballymun Music Programme and Music Generation Cork City.
