‘Cassettes Vs Vinyl’ is a music-themed art exhibition with work by The Specials’ bass player, Horace Panter, and artist friends Morgan Howell and Chris Barton. A study of the transient nature of pop music culture, the Ebow Gallery takes on the look of a record store filled with paintings, prints and sculptures of supersized collectables and mixtapes evoking the analogue era and the musicians and songs who were a part of it. Goldenplec had the pleasure of a visit on the opening night and we can confirm, it’s a visual treat for music fans.

Panter – co-founder of 2Tone records – needs little introduction. While he has previously played in Dublin with The Specials, this will be his first exhibition here, with Panter’s contributions focusing on the recording demo-tape. The cassette’s place in the dissemination of music – along withe the humble Walkman – is one that Panter explores through the visual form: “For the very first time, music was portable and individual; making mixtapes was just so liberating in terms of choosing what to listen to…

As for his colleagues, you might be more familiar with the film work of Chris Barton, who created creatures for Star Wars, The Fifth Element and Harry Potter. Barton’s latest creations are a wonderfully tactile art-form (although maybe ask before pawing them), the painting and fabrication of large 3D replicas of vintage music cassettes.

Artist Morgan Howell‘s sculptural 3D Supersize paintings of 7″ singles, meanwhile, have been picked up by the likes of Neil Diamond, Ozzy Osbourne, Ray Davies, Elvis Costello and Johnny Marr.

Located on 1 Castle Street, Dublin 8, Ebow, the exhibition will open to the public for four weeks from today, Thursday July 27th, 2017.

Paintings, sculptures and limited edition prints will be available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition.

This one is an immersive pleasure, we’d highly recommend a visit.
