It’s a good day for Irish hip hop with new releases from Jafaris and Hare Squead as well as debut releases from Sim Simma Soundsystem and Denise Chaila (produced by Rusangano Family).
If you were lucky enough to attend our Block Party Jam in December you’ll have already seen Chaila in action. If not, you should rectify that situation as soon as possible.
Hare Squead
Hare Squead seemed likely to explode several years ago; however, a couple of setbacks hampered their progression. With new single 100 MilesI, they finally seem to be back on track for 2019.
Jafaris
Former Plec Pick Jafaris has been upping his game considerably of late, and his new single Time – taken from his debut album ‘Stride’ due out on 8th March – should see the young Irish rapper make further inroads into the UK and further afield.
Denise Chaila
We were lucky enough to have Denise and Rusangano Family’s God Knows perform for us back in December where Chaila performed half of Copper Bullets. Having heard several more tracks from the Limerick native, we expect big things in 2019.
Rebel Phoenix
Dubliner Rebel Phoenix is back with another dose of hardcore reality rap.
Pat Lagoon
One of the most promising hip hop acts based outside of Dublin, Waterford’s Pat Lagoon returns with another dark slow groove.
Nonzus Magnus
Experimental hip hop artist Nonzus Magnus has been winning plaudits in the Irish hip hop scene for his abrasive multifaceted approach, which bleeds subgenres together in new and unexpected ways.
Sim Simma Soundsystem
Yamma Yamma is the debut single from Sim Simma Soundsystem – a fusion of dancehall, hip-hop and grime. Their forthcoming release ‘Pass the Aux Cord’ EP produced by Ben Bix and Semi-D, featuring God Knows, Denise Chaila, Breezy iDeyGoke and Chilli Cherry out February 1.
JYellowL
We’re cheating here slightly but we’ve tipped JYellowL for big things in our Plec Picks 2019 series so we are gonna take the liberty of highlighting a track which may have passed you by recently, the video for which was released last week.
