Since their 2019 debut at Australia’s Woodford Folk Festival, Sun Collective’s releases have showcased a deep understanding of orchestration and elaborate arrangement that forms the bedrock of the group’s sonically rich chamber-folk.
Following up on last month’s Wild, Sun Collective have shared New Light – a dreamy folk track that sees frontman Caimin Gilmore harmonising with close collaborator Lisa Hannigan. The track also features bursts of improvisation from contemporary classical musicians Lina Andonovska and Nick Roth playing the bass flute and alto-sax respectively.
“I had been listening to a lot of Adrienne Lenker’s solo work before writing ‘New Light’. I wanted to somehow replicate the richness of her guitar recordings and cross pollinate it with arrangements like Nico Muhly’s on Sam Amidon’s record ‘I See the Sign’,” says Caimhin Gilmore of the track.
The group are set to appear on Other Voices on 15 April on RTÉ 2.
