Mike The Pies’ Battle of the Bands has become a regular fixture in the summer music calendar over the last three years, and last week this year’s competition came to a hugely entertaining conclusion in the legendary Listowel venue.

Five acts took to the stage with the hope of impressing the judging panel of Audrey Kinsella (Radio Kerry), Audrey Reidy (Kerry’s Eye) and Golden Plec’s John Loftus. Taking part on the night were Aftershock, Lucy June, Faux Mystic, John Luke Reynolds and Smithereens, which made for an eclectic mix of musical genres, and a number of particularly sublime performances entertaining the sizeable crowd.

After an enjoyable night of music it was over to the judges, and after much deliberation they plummed for the jazzy funk-punk fusion of Smithereens from Cork, who were excellent on the night, just about edging the win from the hugely talented singer-songwriter from Portumna, John Luke Reynolds.

Michal Wagner from last year’s winners Queenless Kings presented the prize to the absolutely delighted band, Smithereens will now have the opportunity to record a single in Camden Recording Studios, for release on FIFA Records.
