Berlin based Galwegian songwriter Ruth Mac laments the commercialisation of Dublin on ‘Home From Home’ her first single in over two years. ‘Home From Home’ arrives just in time for her performance at Ireland Music Week 2023 and sees the singer wondering if progress is really progress at all.

“I was ambling around Dublin and was struck by a sense of disconnect. No one was around and all my favorite old hangouts had been replaced with sterile alternatives. It was the first time I felt like a stranger in the city where I spent my most formative years,” explains Mac of her shock at seeing the soul of Dublin whittled away so much during a pit-stop in the Capital on her way home to Galway in 2019.

“The central feeling isn’t one of anger towards Dublin for selling out, rather it’s me grappling with a certain loss and this somber sense that the city had moved on and forgotten me. It’s the realization that the places that hold us change their shape too, we don’t always get to neatly slot back in.”

Ruth Mac plays Grand Social Ballroom for Ireland Music Week on Friday, 6th October, 2023. Mac will also headline the Workman’s Cellar on Tuesday, 5th December, 2023. Tickets are available here
