Originally from Florida, Tom Petty is best known at the lead singer of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and as member of 1980s super group the Travelling Wilburys, which also feature Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and ELO’s Jeff Lynne.
Petty’s music career began to little avail in the early 70s with the group Mudcrutch before he reluctantly stepped forward as a solo artist following the group’s demise in 1975. With the help of some ex Mudcrutch personnel Petty went on to form The Heartbreakers releasing their self-titled debut album in 1976.
Petty would go on to release 13 studio albums with the Heartbreakers and 3 solo albums, most famously ‘Full Moon Fever’ (1989). Bizarrely, despite all their success, The Heartbreakers last album ‘Hypnotic Eye’ (2014) would be their first US number one album.
It’s estimated that Tom Petty sold over 80 million albums in his career.
