Leaving a highly successful instrumental rock band to pursue a solo career as a folk singer songwriter may seem like an incredibly strange, possibly detrimental move, but in the case of Tony Wright it seems to be paying off. Wright, formerly of And So I Watch You From Afar, has left behind his effects pedals, amps set to 11 and bandmates, to embark on this new direction using the moniker VerseChorusVerse. Having already received rave reviews for his live shows, VerseChorusVerse is preparing for the release of the incarnation’s first EP, the simply titled VCV EP.
Opening the album EP is One Fine Day, beginning with an upbeat strum. From the first listen this is a song that will stick in your head, but not in an annoying way. With a catchy melody and lyrics, it is the perfect opener to draw you in.
Into The Autumn highlights VerseChorusVerse’s strongest asset, his voice. It is a shame this talent was hidden from the world for so long! Something which really stands out not only in this song, but across the EP, is just how easily accessable it is. It is the perfect soundtrack to just unwind to and relax. A rhythmic beat and magical quality this is the standout track of the EP.
Lyrically, The Accused is a highpoint. A simple string section and gentle backing vocals, the track transports you to another world and another time.
As you would expect, the guitar work is exceptional, in particular during final track Throw Me Away (Sold Us Astray). The gentle plucking combined with tender vocals gives us a haunting ballad full of raw emotion.
Overall the high quality of EP leaves the listener wanting more, after a first listen you will want to just put it on repeat. While Wright’s voice may not always be perfect; slight imperfections add more sincerity and charm to each track. While it is most definitely a collection of folk pop songs, there is just something incredibly accessible about it. No matter what genre of music you are a fan of, you will find something about this EP to fall in love with.
