You don’t often get a new Irish band with a fresh sound. Too many times I’ve been out and about in Dublin and whoever is playing that night sounds exactly like Green Day or Kings Of Leon, depending on genre. That’s even if they bother to play their own stuff rather than taking the easy route and playing covers. So when I hear something different I tend to take to it. The new Dublin based two piece, The Lives Of Millionaires, are just that – different. They’ve just released their debut EP which is self titled.

The EP was released on New Years Eve and is a calming mix of drum of guitar. The record has four songs, and they’re the type of music that you could lie on the grass to and watch the clouds go by. If bands were religions then The Lives Of Millionaires would be Buddhists! The opening song, ‘What If I Wont‘, stands out the most as a great chill out piece of music paired up with some great lyrics. It is actually a tad reminiscent of The Stone Roses, but only a bit.

Although the music is very good, I do have my worries. While I like this alternative style, it’s remarkably easy to forget. I’ve never been amazing with remembering certain parts of a song, but never have I had to listen to a song so many times just to do up a review. And the last song on the EP, ‘Chrysalis‘, seems to be the same 30 seconds of music on repeat. But that’s just one song, and they aren’t all like that.

I don’t want to sound like I don’t like the EP, because I do like it. It has a charisma about it that you just don’t get from other début EPs. Overall it is a good record. It’s set the foundations for something that could potentially be big. The two lads behind The Lives Of Millionaires certainly have the talent, but they have the hardest task any new band has to face ahead of them now – capturing an audience and keeping them entertained.
