Barry Murphy has been making electronic music under various guises for almost 20 years now, meaning he’s a veteran compared to many on the scene. ‘Only The Lonely Know The Glow Is Failing’, is his latest single under newest moniker; ‘The Last Sound’.
In some ways ‘Only the lonely know the glow is failing’, reminds me of Athlete, due to the similar airy vocals gliding through the track, yet it also tips its hat heavily to the Flaming Lips. It is possibly this feeling of familiarity that makes the track so enjoyable, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the terrific production value of it.
The B side, ‘Turbochant’ is the weaker track here. In many ways it coasts along not really doing anything of note, but upon listening again it seems to gain more substance. It probably needs to be heard live, with the right sound setup, in order to really experience its subtleties.
The Ollie Olsen remix is an absolutely mammoth track, that builds and builds, capturing the euphoric sound of a late 90’s trance record and dragging it into 2011 with a riveting electro style crescendo. It’s a symphony of soaring, epic vocals that would bring anyone onto the dancefloor from the darkest corner of the club and leaves a lasting impression.
The Magnetize remix throws the track onto a techno slant and doesn’t look back, bounding along effortlessly. However, it’s the lead single and Ollie Olsen remix, that really make this worth purchasing.
