Superhanz are a 4 piece Indie/Alternative band from Kildare. After a string of gigs (most of which being Battle of the Bands competitions which they won) around Kildare and Dublin, the band sat down to some heavy writing and have now released their first E.P “Alpha”. I caught Superhanz live at one of the battle of the bands and thought they were superb.

The record opens with A Message to Yourself, a nice chiming guitar riff opens with a steady drum beat. Singer Stephen Fagan’s voice is hard to compare to anything else, it’s a blend of all your favourite indie bands rolled into one but still unique. The Moon Will Be There is my highlight, opening with a slick modern Arctic Monkeys style riff, and drummer David Pearson offering an unexpected, syncopated rhythm that adds to the creativeness of the song. Fagans songwriting is clearly close to heart, echoing the thoughts of repression with the words “don’t ever stand in front of me/don’t ever be that person you want to be” until the melodic chorus of “The moon will be there/and you will be there too” that succumbs to a heavy break.

To What We Owe follows, opening with a nicely uplifting beat. Indie pop-rock influences flow through this track, especially in the chorus, the guitar riff definitely a tip of the hat to this style. Control takes us out with a similar display, with the harmonies on this track showing more diverse areas to the band’s music.

For me, Superhanz have everything to be a viable indie band, good songwriting leaving us with a very solid EP. Hopefully with Alpha, this can help lift them from Kildare and Dublin to bigger and better places.
