Looking for something provocative to round the weekend off? Then it’s time you discovered P.A.L.A.S. Not so much a band as a one man techno wizard intent on raising the machines and laying waste to this planet we call earth. Their latest offering of artificial intelligence comes in the form of Star Shade, a nifty four track EP steeped in structure, timing and control. Definitions, broad critiques and comparisons all go out the window here and it comes down to one thing; either you’ll like it or you won’t.

With this style of electronica, appreciating it will generally come down to the listeners mood and late night Sunday’s are good days to switch off and let P.A.L.A.S. take control of your mind for as long as you’ll allow it. From opening track Star Shade, you’re swiftly moved from safe, layered background music to the dance floor ready Uppercut that rudely interrupts the EP’s tranquil beginnings and unapologetically slams you to life. Despite no lyrics and rigid structure, chances are you can’t help but feel entranced by it’s impenetrable sound.

Away Team is an odd offering. Short, mixed with Space Invaders effects and basically left as a twisted arcade games soundtrack. Eerie keyboards mixed with 10 points, can’t hate that. Kaneda’s Theme ups the quality another notch and continues the good work Uppercut started. The domineering keyboards and  sharp rhythm again make this an unusually appealing track. Maybe not suited for dance floors, but will sit right at home on Skynet’s IPod.
