For years people have been talking about a new rock revolution lurking in the subconscious of the Irish people, just waiting for its chance to burst forth and deliver us from this commercial wasteland of debt, recession, misery and ever growing unemployment lines. Is 2010 the year we finally get to see it materialize? We have a new rock station (Radio Nova), 2 new metal bars (Gypsy Rose & New Fibbers) and a brand new heavy metal club night in O’Neills under Tara Street and tonight sees one of Dublin’s leading blues rock bands, Jaded Sun launch their brand new EP, Whiskey Drinker which is set to be followed by a brand new studio album next year. Not too bad eh? beats sitting at home worrying about X-Factor.

Whiskey Drinker is the perfect introduction to Jaded Sun. For those who aren’t familiar with their debut album Gypsy Trip this will teach you everything you need to know. The EP’s title track is a hard hitting country blues tumbler with its feet dabbling in Celtic punk and heavy bluegrass. Second up is the stoner rock styled ‘Sweet Mary’ which is firmly rooted in the funky bass driven category. Sweet licks, sex filled lyrics and a good mass appeal chorus that screams for an open stage and a massive crowd for appropriate ambiance.

‘Fire’ is an excellent mix between classic American country rock and heavy, hard hitting riffs n solo’s. ‘Breakdown’ is the albums ballad with easy on the ears, early seventies folk styles, harmonies and complimentary changes. Not the highlight of the new material but Jaded Sun will always insist on a few ‘mum would like it’ ballads on their records and if Guns N’ Roses can do it, so can JS. A new mix of the bands classic ‘Crave’ finishes things off nicely.

Is the new rock revolution strong enough the catapult Jaded Sun into the premier league? Time will tell but the signs look good and if this record shows one thing it’s that Jaded Sun have the ability, talent and the material to go all the way.
