In The Willows - Long Time ListenerJust over a year after their birth in May of 2011, Waterford based band In the Willows have released their début EP ‘Long Time Listener’, and proven themselves a band to watch. The band took their name from children’s classic tale ‘The Wind in the Willows’, and the influence is obvious in this three track release, rife with atmospheric harmonies and a very natural melodic structure.

The Opening track Time of Year is a perfect example of the style this band seem to be working towards accomplishing. Slowly building, this song brims with rich harmonies, and deep swells of melody, and shows no shortage of atmosphere with an earthy, natural sound.

Trying certainly packs less punch than its predecessor. The female vocals become slightly harsh at points, an aspect I feel is due to parts not being within her best range,  which doesn’t enhance the very serene aura at work here. The track does, however, have its high points. An easy sway and a classical orchestral vibe carries throughout, giving this track a very relaxed feel, and makes it very listenable.

The three track EP closes out with the aptly named It’s Over, showing the vocals at their very best, low, rich and sweet. When combined with the deep, gravelly quality of her male accompaniment, it makes for something beautiful. Though a quiet, reflective track in itself, there is nothing here that allows the listener to lose attention, and offers nothing but a gentle, relaxing experience.

There is no denying that every young band has scope to develop, and In the Willows certainly have their way to go, but this is a band that has the talent, qualities and ability to make a real impression. Having already built up a credible Irish fan-base, I doubt we’ll have to wait long for further developments. I, for one, am looking forward to it.
