Ghost Estates OctoberGhosts Estates is a familiar phrase these days. It is most commonly used in somewhat depressing contexts when talking about the many estates left vacant across Ireland. But over the last year or so it has been used more positively thanks to the band which has made a dint on the Irish music scene, with their impressive live performances. The release of Ghost Estates self-titled début album was highly anticipated in many circles. But does it live up to the hype?

Many releases this decade have fused twangy guitars melded with soft-electro and echoing vocals alá The XX, but Ghost Estates mix it up a bit more than your average band who cross-pollinate traditional indie with electro swirls.  There is no denying that their much-lauded stage presence translates well on to record. Paris is a masterful slice of soft-electro perfection; the guitar is hypnotising and the listener is treated to a brief and enticing heavier moments towards the middle of the song. October starts off well with an intriguing electro intro which you would expect to build into something big and powerful. However, it keeps a mild and very constant temper throughout the track. While this is somewhat disappointing the track should still be appreciated for its understated beauty.

There are songs which better display the band’s talent, such as Shanty which eases up on the plugged-in instruments and combines clean-cut vocals with simple drum beats and acoustic guitar, making for a very soothing and intriguing song. It stands out for its simplicity and most importantly, its beautifully prominent lead vocals, likewise on the potentially brilliant Winters Day. The last track Forever or Never ditches the electro-synthesizers and shows of the band’s raw talent; perhaps this is something that should be considered for future recordings; while the electro feel suits them, there is more credibility in their more stripped back songs.

Ghost Estates are certainly a band worth checking out whether live or on record. They produce ambient and melodic music that melds different genres together to make an intriguing album that merits repeat visits.
