Impressed with their live performance at the State vs Goldenplec gig, I decided to check out Created By Comets new EP with hopes of at least hearing something promising for the future.

The EP consists of four tracks, all of which were played on the night. I was especially looking forward to the quality of production on the brass section, as you don’t see a lot of saxophones or trumpets in bands these days.

Unfortunately, what I heard live does not translate well on the record, as it seems to be unable to settle on a definitive style. At times it can be quite funky, but all in all I was disappointed at how hollow and small the band sounded even with a brass section. These instruments are supposed to provide depth to the music, but on the record they fail to capture that big sound they are searching for.
A rock band at heart, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist does bust out a few nice riffs and solos with the band busting out elements of funk and show band with an undoubtedly talented brass section. The problem is the record left me wanting more than a simplified version of bad RHCP music from the ‘Stadium Arcadium’ era.

Put it down to production if you like, but I think if Created By Comets are to depend on the brass to define their sound, they need more instruments in that section to provide that depth and big sound that makes music like that so accessible. They definitely have the foundations of a great band and maybe in the future, with some improvement, we will be talking about Created By Comets as the ‘next big thing’. I did watch The Blues Brothers after listening to this record, so I suppose that is worth something.
