Alright is the follow up to last year’s exquisite Be in Love by Dublin-based Monaghan songwriter, Rachel Mae Hannon.
Set against soulful guitar, looping drum-work and cooing backing harmonies, Hannon’s voice elevates to new levels, the neo-soul singer at home like never before.
Today, she releases the accompanying video for that track.
Harnessing the DIY culture of Dublin’s street art scene, Hannon and friends, Barry Kavanagh and Aisling Grennan took to Richmond Street with “an iPhone, a gimbal, a mop (as a makeshift camera mount)… and a lot of hope”.
In her own words, “we decided on Richmond Street… as we felt the graffiti itself gave a layered texture. The turnover of graffiti there is so fast, and although there might be a masterpiece there one day, it is completely covered by another the next. I thought that this, along with the idea of lipstick or makeup, resembled how people sometimes mask how they really feel – that they might be pretending or covering up their feelings”.
She continues, “I think it’s a very Irish thing to say ‘I’m grand’ when you could actually be feeling like crap inside. The video shows me having a party by myself in an attempt to almost cheer myself up and convince myself that I’m alright”.
Nevertheless, it doubles up as a “positive affirmation” to herself and can be viewed in all its glory below.
