UK producer Puma Blue, aka Jacob Allen, the man behind the beat of Irish rapper Biig Pigs’s woozy hit Perdida is coming to Dublin for a show in The Workman’s Club next month.
Allen, a BRIT School graduate has drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley, thanks to his shimmering jazz tinged guitar licks. While his Lo Fi approach to production has piqued the interest of rappers and electro artists in his native London and beyond.
“I was just working on this beat and me and Jess are friends anyway, so I sent it to her” says Allen on working with Biig Pig aka Jess Smyth on the track Perdida which appears on her EP ‘Big Fan of The Sesh Vol.1’
“She said she could definitely write something on it and sent me this beautiful draft which had that hook and those Spanish bars. I was just so into it, it made me like the beat again. So we just sort of finished it bit by bit over a few weeks and I finished the production around her vocals. She’s got an incredible ear for melody but she’s so chill, we’ll just talk for ages and I feel like she’s never trying to write a banger or anything – it just happens naturally for her.”
If Perdida floats your boat then Allen’s brand of lo-fi jazztronica may well interest you too. Listen to his most recent release Moon Undah Water below.
Puma Blue perform live as a sort of morbid urban jazz quartet which Irish fans will be able to experience for themselves when they play The Workman’s Club on October 20th.
Puma Blue live at The Workman’s Club, Saturday October 20th. Tickets €12 on sale here.
