CyrilThere’s always a certain nervousness when attending a gig where the headliner has one big crowd pleasing track. This was certainly the case with Cyril Hahn, the Swiss DJ whose popularity has exploded since releasing his remix of Destiny Child’s Say My Name. That new found popularity is not without merit – his other reworks of the likes of Solange, Gabrielle Aplin and recently Haim, demonstrate great technical talent as well as a broad and eclectic knowledge of music – but how will a crowd eager to hear one track respond to a two hour set?

By the time Cyril took to the stage just after one o’clock, the energy in the room was high. Josh Gordon had just finished off a charming little support set which included some Bump N’ Grind to get the crowd going. Issues setting up meant Suga Suga by Baby Bash and TLC’s No Scrubs continued the vibe as changeover track, but from then on it went a bit downhill. Lesser known tracks left the crowd under-whelmed and seemed like time-fillers between his aforementioned remixes. At times his beat mixing even seemed sluggish – not something you’d expect from a DJ of his reputation. His Solange and Haim remixes were well received though, demonstrating that he’s more than a one-trick-pony producer.

However, as the night lingered on, the crowd became more apathetic to the performance and the dull murmur of chit-chat became to fill the room. Eventually the sound of Destiny’s Child got the crowd in full spirits. Drinks were spilled, tables stood upon and the room became one large drunken karaoke session for the song everyone had come to hear.

It was a disappointing set, but perhaps the young DJ will fare better in a more relaxed environment; a crowded field in Kilmainham on a (hopefully) sunny Sunday comes to mind. Otherwise he may just become one of those DJs whose strength lies behind the mixing desk rather than in front of a crowd.
