It may have been a disappointing week for Belfast’s Kneecap who were overlooked for the Oscars, but there’s plenty to be excited about in Irish music this week. Northern Irish breakout star Jordan Adetunji delivers his debut album ‘A Jaguar’s Dream’; with its singles having amassed over 500m streams on Spotify alone it’s sure to land at the top of the charts around the globe.
The entrants for Eurosong were announced this week with Bobbi Arlo, Samantha Mumba, Niyl and Adgy vying to represent Ireland in Basel later in the year. Ahead of his support slots with 19th & Main in the 3Olympia, Crumlin’s finest KhakiKid has returned with the indie tinged hiphop vibes of ‘AppleBottomCigarets’, while hotly tipped indie-electro artist Annie-Dog pays homage to David Gray with part cover, part original ‘Please Forgive Me, David Gray’.
Gavin James parks the ballads in favour of an upbeat, contemporary sound on ‘Goldrush’, while Maria Kelly laments the housing crisis on ‘His Parents’ House’ as does folk hero Lisa O’Neill on ‘Homeless In the Thousands (Dublin In The Digital Age)’ featuring the Libertines’ Pete Doherty. And staying with folk Dublin duo VARO have offered the first glimpse into their upcoming collaborative album that features the likes of Lankum, John Francis Flynn and Junior Brother with ‘Red Robin feat. Alannah Thornburgh’, while Fionn Regan continues to shares ‘Two Sides’ a track that didn’t quite fit his recent album ‘O Avalanche’.
There’s debut singles from Cork’s Fiona Lucia (Hang On A While) and Dublin duo Barkbeat (Exit Wound), while up-and-coming Dublin quartet Ciúnas impress with their slow-burning second single ‘Temptress’. Other new acts on this week’s playlist include EDM act Altara with ‘Please Don’t Leave’ and Hannahbella who turns from goth to pop on ‘Dainty Fae’. Kildare’s Blue Slate deliver the standout rock song of the week with the sprawling title track from their upcoming debut EP ‘This Is How I Sleep At Night’.
And if that wasn’t enough for you there’s also new music from The Murder Capital, A Burial at Sea, Kedo, Hi Vista, how r u, $one Blue, and the super smooth When I Feel Your Love from Chris Wong. To be considered for this playlist fill in the form here
