On September 26th, Soul Doubt Magazine presents a bumper night of hip hop, including a final screening of the Irish hip hop documentary ‘UP NEXT’, a live panel with the documentary’s director Bobby Zithelo, a listening party for Burner Records’ founder FYNCH‘s brand new EP ‘Bookies Pens & Loose Ends’ , a live podcast recording with Tebi Rex following the release of their debut album ‘The Young Will Eat The Old’ this week, and live performances from the likes of Dena Anuksa, Malaki, and NUXSENSE.
UP NEXT: Irish hip hop Documentary Screening
Earlier this year, Soul Doubt Magazine and District Magazine teamed up, along with Red Bull Ireland, to present a preview showing of Bobby Zithelo’s short film on Irish hip-hop ‘UP NEXT’. The film follows enigmatic hip-hop artist Why-Axis days before his headline show in The Grand Social. His unflinching work ethic and creativity has cemented him deservedly as a well-respected musician, credited for inspiring a generation of young emcees in the country.
Since the film’s debut, Bobby Zithelo has continued to refine and extend his definitive documentary. With unprecedented demand at the preview screening, this will be your last chance to see ‘UP NEXT’ on the big screen.
New independent publications from all around the country are giving a voice to those in the culture, now more than ever. Bobby Zithelo explores the pressing issues surrounding Irish hip-hop coverage in conversation with Soul Doubt Magazine founder Shane McAuley.
Burner Records: FYNCH Listening Party
FYNCH is a 22-year-old hip-hop artist hailing from Drimnagh in Dublin. His distinguished debut project ‘MIXVAPE’, released under District Recordings in June 2018, set a distinctive tone that cultivated the attention of fans and critics alike. Singles released since ‘Home’ and ‘Saipan’ carry the same standards, cementing FYNCH as a bright beacon of Ireland’s hip-hop culture. His new EP ‘Bookies Pens & Loose Ends’ is a five-track introspective look at post-academic life; devoid of hope, struggling with confidence and identity.
Tebi Rex: Live Podcast
In a conversation hosted by Golden Plec’s own Cailean Coffey, Tebi Rex will take a moment to sit down and assess what has been a huge week in the band’s journey. Following the release of their debut album ‘The Young Will Eat The Old’ last week, this podcast will see the pair discuss the themes encapsulated in their debut, the recording process, and where they see their next steps taking them.
The duo’s last EP ‘Welcome to the Darkest Year of Our Adventures’, released in 2018 described their story so far; the best and worst year of their lives – one that saw them release a string of acclaimed tracks that featured on the Viral 50 Ireland, United Kingdom Viral 50, Spotify’s Alternative Hip Hop, A Breath of Fresh Éire, Rap IE, and featured on the cover of Spotify’s release of urban Irish music – The New Éire. This will be a conversation not to be missed.
Live Performances:
The evening will also feature a number of live performances from some of the rising stars of Irish hip hop, including Dena Anuksa, Malaki, and NUXSENSE.
Dena Anuksa is a Belfast-based DJ and MC is part of the NxGen Music Group; a collective who also have a hand in helping the career of fellow Belfast star Jordan Adetunji, and the newly formed GXRL CODE collective; which champions women in the Irish music industry.
Malaki is a 19-year-old Dublin based hip-hop artist, whose art involves experimenting with a variety of hip-hop styles, including poetry and spoken word. Malaki synthesises a rich and original interpretation of Dublin life, combining personal expression with sharp social and political critique.
NUXSENSE encapsulate modern Dublin in thrilling ways. With origin stories that extend to all over the planet and a region-neutral sound built on moody synths, thick clouds of weed smoke and the spirit of Earl Sweatshirt; this six-man collective – Luthorist, Jehnova, AL.I, REM$, Bogzy and Sivv – are a fixture of the underground in Ireland’s increasingly multicultural capital.
Earlybird tickets (admits two for €15) are available from The Sugar Club here, subject to availability.
