After a string of successful releases racking up close to ten million Spotify streams, Varley continue the winning streak with Bubble Up – a lo-fi indie banger based on particularly rough day at work for Dublin-born lead vocalist Claire-Ann Varley.
Bubble Up is propelled by a simple but effective bass line and a dreamy synth riff courtesy of Claire-Ann and her German bandmates Joschka Bender and Matthias Heising. The track’s most compelling moment comes in the form of a drum and bass drop out allowing Claire-Ann’s airy vocals to sit comfortably atop Midwestern emo indebted guitar chords.
“The bones of ‘Bubble Up’ was written on the first day of my new job. Totally overwhelmed and embarrassed after being given out to,” says Claire-Ann of her inspiration.
“Public humiliation is my worst nightmare. I’m quite happy to fade into the background (ironic, I know). I told my new work colleagues that I was going for a break but in reality I sat in the bathroom, upset and started to hum a melody.
“Sometimes I find it hard to slow down my thoughts or turn off the inner dialogue. I guess ‘Bubble Up’ is that feeling of the pressure rising and not knowing how to keep it together and wishing you weren’t like this.“
