Lisa Hannigan definitely doesn’t dwell too much on the past. Hardly a week has gone since her latest album ‘Passenger’ lost out to Jape’s ‘Ocean of Frequency’ for the 2011 Meteor Choice Music Prize. Despite this she’s in her usual giddy form as she plays a blinding set to a sold out Vicar Street. Kicking off our Bank Holiday weekend with a stellar performance that does from serious to light-hearted and from minimalist to lavish.
Highlight of the night came from ‘Safe Travels (Don’t Die)’ with its unusual matra-like sing along chant. The entire crowd sings along in such a subdued manner that it’s hard to believe it wasn’t rehearsed beforehand.
Hilarious solo is not a phrase that gets used too often but when you have Miss Hannigan covering ‘Tonight You Belong to Me’ it becomes a fitting description. Instead of getting one of her very talented band members to take up horns for the song we have Lisa Hannigan try her best at impersonating a trumpet all the while holding back the laughter.
Hannigan is no doubt one of the top Irish artists at the moment so having her play a sold out hometown show the night before St. Patrick’s Day is a treat indeed.
