Kicking off the first Whelan’s Sounds of Summer four day musical feast on a rainy June evening were Choice Prize nominated Cashier No.9 with support from Futures Apart.

Futures Apart showed some serious promise but feel a little underdeveloped as a band. The individual pieces are certainly there so we can expect to hear some exciting things from the quartet in the next 12 months.

Cashier No.9 played a solid set that was a little tame for a band kicking off a new mini-festival. Still touring their acclaimed debut album ‘To the Death of Fun’ the band fail to pick up enough momentum for the show to make it out of first gear. Audience reaction was subdued and next to nothing but this isn’t entirely the Belfast sextets fault as the majority of their songs play out at their own comfortable tempo that doesn’t lend itself to mass audience participation.
