Ahead of their biggest headline show to date at Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens on 11 July, IDLES managed to squeeze in time to appear on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series while on tour in the States. Usually more well-known for quiet acoustic performances, the band paid no heed (“We are not the Jonas Brothers, they , unleashing the usual ferocious, wall-shaking performance that they’re known for.

Opening with Never Fight A Man With A Perm, frontman Joe Talbot made a noticeable change to the lyrics, namechecking Ireland’s favourite son Roy Keane in the second line, before adopting a somewhat iffy Dublin accent for the “Never fight a man with a perm” line. Before delving into newest single Mercedes Marxist, Talbot then raised his drink to the audience and said “Sláinte”, which was greeted with slightly confused laughter from those in the room.

Now, we don’t know if Joe was just practising for the upcoming Iveagh Gardens show or if he’s got some connection to Ireland but we’re now more than happy to claim him as our own.

IDLES play the Iveagh Gardens on July 11th alongside The Claque and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, with tickets available here.
