When Goldenplec talks to Will Hehir, bass guitarist of New York Indie-Pop start-ups Misterwives, the band are preparing for their first Irish gig. He is himself born of Irish parents, his mother a Galwegian and his Dad blessed to be from Co. Clare, so you can’t blame him for being a tiny bit excited.

“It’s a dream, my Dad and my Mom actually live in New York now but my Dad’s flying out for it so it should be a lot of fun.”

They’re currently on the European leg of their tour in promotion of debut album 'Our Own House' which was released in February and has since garnered positive reviews, with the band being hailed as one of the more exciting acts to come on the scene in the past year.

“Mandy [the band’s lead singer] wrote most of it in a treehouse. We kind of watched her for a little bit while we were writing the album. We were short on time so we were a bit worried. but she absolutely crushed it.”

They do come recommended by MTV Buzzworthy as the “next golden children of pop.” In this case there’s cause for excitement at such a bold proclamation. The band do not settle for the easy rhythms that can be widely heard on the radio - their willingness to strive further than what is expected is indicative of a band who really enjoy the work they do.

“I listened to a lot of Red Hot Chilli Peppers - our guitarist is a huge John Frusciante fan - and listening to him really helped with the music. We listened to a shit-load of Motown to try and capture that sound as well.”

Although they don’t give off the biggest whiff of Neutral Milk Hotel or Beirut, they have a history of using the lesser known members of the instrument family as a means to mixing up the sound of their outfit. Their tastes as a collective are eclectic and wide-ranging enough to allow for short detours into the odd world of needlessly strange music.

“Our keyboard player is brilliant, he plays the glockenspiel, the trumpet, and the steel drum. Having the capacity to do that, we want to take advantage of it.”

They were offered a contract a week after their first performance together. With such pace comes great responsibility, but no burden seems to have fallen on the band. Friends beforehand, so they remain, as each of them moves positively to the next step in their career together without registering the trappings that usually go along with success.

“We all recognise that we are essentially living the dream so now we don’t really argue. It’s actually hilarious because whenever we leave the bus, or whenever we’re off tour, I actually live with the drummer and the singer so we’re always with each other.”

Despite falling into the music industry like a greased dildo, Will insists that the pace hasn’t been a problem - it’s more like their natural speed. Caught up in the enjoyment of the ride, there’s been no cause for second thoughts.

“I’m sure when I told my Mom that I was quitting my job she was a bit nervous, but it does seem to have worked out since then.”

It would be easy to pass off Misterwives as just another indie-pop outfit, but they are more than that. Their music is effervescent with the joy of living and the excitement of being young, something that remains a natural expression of the band themselves as they continue on their own personal adventure.
