This week we celebrate International Women's Day, a day that has been recognizing the plight and achievements of women for over a century. On the 10th of March Sin E will host Bitches Brew, an event that aims to showcase and celebrate women spearheading independent Irish music.

Bitches Brew (which takes its name from the Miles Davis album) had it's first outing in 2014 in The Sweeney Mongrel as part of Dimestore Recordings. This year, it is back bigger and better than ever, aiming to raise funds for the White Ribbon Campaign, a campaign that seeks to end men's violence against women.

Bitches Brew has now been registered as an annual event, and organizers Claire Batt and Christina Quill planning a night dedicated to saluting women in the arts, while creating awareness for this unique charity.

"I think it's important to celebrate everything in music" says Claire Batt. "However, I do think it is important to appreciate how hard women in history have worked for their dreams and have experienced harder struggles in doing so in the music industry than men."

The line up is a mighty fine assembly of female artists, featuring Fox E and The Good Hands, Spines, Sarah Red and Laura Ann Brady to name but a few.

"We wanted artists that were female or had female members. There are a lot more female artists being noticed than a few years ago and I think it has something to do with confidence, there has always been the talent." adds Claire. "We had so much choice."

"This is not about slamming men or being sexist, it's about celebrating women in music and showcasing their talents and giving them confidence."

So why the White Ribbon campaign? "We were looking up information on a number of women-based charities, and we really felt White Ribbon fit our ethos. White Ribbon Ireland was founded by the men's development network, their aim is to stop men's violence against women, the charity is run by men, which I thought was amazing.

"We hope to raise funds for ending men's violence against women and children, and we are encouraging people to give a suggested donation of seven euro at the door. We want to spread information for both men and women on this issue and raise awareness. On the night people can expect lots of great music, talks and lots of information of the white ribbon campaign."

If you wish to donate money to the white ribbon campaign you can do so on their website www.whiteribbon.ie and to see more events taking place for International Women's Day check out wwww.internationalwomensday.com.

Bitches Brew takes place in Sin E on Ormand Quay on Thursday 10th of March. Doors are at 8pm and there is a suggested donation of €7 at the door. For the full line-up and more information go to Bitches Brew Dublin.
