So the Eurovision 2010 is now over and done with. Couple of different points of note that i guess i’d like to add to the proceedings on the night. It seems regardless of the voting system they use block voting continues to dominate when absolutely abysmal entries like Russia “Lost and Forgotten” (which believe me, it already is) can finish 11th. And a decent (but obviously not Eurovision winner quality) of Niamh Kavanagh’s “It’s for you” finishes so low in the ranking.
I thought Tom Dice’s “Me and My Guitar” sounded a lot like Walking in Memphis with new lyrics, favourite “Drip Drop” from Azerbaijan finished 5th. My tip Denmark finished 4th. Romania’s Duel pianist tune “Playing with Fire” which grew on my over the course of the semi’s and final finished 3rd. Turkeys Linkin park style entry managed to finish 2nd and i guess with the effort they put in they probably deserved a high placing but its just over a day after and i can’t remember how the tune even goes which says a lot to me.
Winner on the night was a highly tipped German Entry called “Satellite” from a young 18yr old girl called Lena. Her song was already quite popular in Europe pre-Eurovision so she had a slight head start. I wouldn’t have thought it was the best song of the Eurovision but its certainly the one that can be easiest recalled.
all in all i thought that If Russia, Israel, Spain, Georgia, Armenia were worth top 15 places that Ireland’s entry was worth at least that. Once again the UK prop up the entire event. I have sympathy for them as it wasn’t the worst song there and they still finished bottom. Block voting will have had a lot to do with it and until we can figure a system where political voting doest affect the outcome of a song contest we will continue to have skewed table. I do think the top 5 is largely how i might have called it. Definitely 3 of the 5 i would have pegged as top 5 contenders, the other two it has taken time for me to be swayed on them but i don’t think they are wrongly high placing. Back to the drawing board for Ireland, Niamh deserves commendation for trying, maybe next year we should try a catchy pop tune instead of a ballad. They don’t seem to be as popular in Eurovision in recent times. Drip Drop is the closest to a Ballad in the top 5 which proves my point.
Onwards to 2011.
