When singer-songwriter Emmy the Great  visited China for the first time in 2017 at the behest of the British Council to play 4 shows she thought she knew what she was letting herself in for.

Believing her ancestral ties to the country had prepared her for what lay ahead instead she quickly realised that the country was not what she had anticipated set about immersing herself in the modern China.

Living on a small pedestrian-only island called Gulangyu, she began interviewing local people, trying to build a picture of Xiamen, one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Emmy The Great will tell the story of her life-changing trip to China through music and performance with the help of Dfu, one of Xiamen’s finest musicians and sound artists.
