Up-and-coming Dublin artist Dubh Lee has delivered a video for her breakup song ‘Carousel’ which features New Secret Weapon’s David Griffin on bass and drums. The raucous blues track sees Dubh Lee stepping away from her folk style she has previously been known for over the passed number of years which has seen her play events such as the Ruby Sessions, Electric Picnic and the Rory Gallagher festival and open for the likes of Jack Lukeman and Bagatelle.
Keen to display her diverse abilities, Dubh Lee has She has collaborated with rappers Sea High and Daly and drum’n’bass outfit WOB!. To capture this new heavier sound displayed at recent live outings, Dubh Lee decamped to the noise merchants studio of choice The Meadow in Co. Wicklow (Bitch Falcon, Thumper) with Griffin in tow.
The results capture the rage that Dubh Lee was experiencing this time last year. “At the time Carousel was written, last December, I was in a post-breakup haze of drinking and being miserable, and the lyrics are an obvious reflection of that.” explains Dubh Lee of the songs origins. “I was lonely and I felt like I was careening from session to session to distract myself from my heartache.”
When it came to crafting the video for Carousel, Dubh Lee called on some familial expertise. “I worked with my brother Declan on the music video and told him I wanted to make something trippy and disorienting to mirror the subject matter. I gave him free reign after that, and told him to make it as weird as he liked. He pulled out all the stops with greenscreen and lighting effects and I’m delighted with how it turned out.”
