We told you about this a week or two ago at our admiration for the attempt in itself, hell he could have said he was going to just stay awake for 100 hours and I would have been damn impressed.

However Dave Browne today all kinds of destroyed the Guinness World Record for the longest guitar playing session in the world. At 10:20am this morning (Friday June 17th) Dave Browne was officially crowned a World Record breaker after starting at 4pm on Sunday June 12th in The Temple Bar pub, Dublin. Given the strict rules and regulations set down by the Guinness World Records, he had a 30 second break between songs (which had to be recognisable, published music lasting at least two minutes) building to a 40 minute break every eight hours which enabled him to power nap, eat a protein meal, shower and change.

A special moment on Wednesday afternoon came when Dave got to play a rare Stevie Ray Vaughan Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. The signed, limited edition model was loaned to him by its owner Pat Henry for a few hours (the first time played in 20 years!) as a gesture of good luck.

He played guitar continuously for 114 hours and 20 minutes which consisted of 1372 different pieces of music, roughly 12 per hour which is not only a testament to his endurance as well as his memory of music. Not only that but at the 90 hour mark as Dave thought he was closing in on the World Record, he was informed that the world record stood at 113 hours and not the previously thought 100. Yet Dave persevered and won through, he said

“I am absolutely ecstatic! It feels surreal. I have to say I am incredibly lucky to have had such great support from friends, family and fellow musicians and visitors to the pub as they really kept me going.

Over the course of the world record attempt in The Temple Bar pub, Dave was joined by fellow musicians on stage to help keep him motivated throughout his performance. Playing all genres and styles of music, well known artists included Colm Ó Snodaigh from Kíla, Nick Kelly of The Fat Lady Sings, drummer Barry Campbell from Blink, Dublin band Tarantella Fall and a host of regular artists who perform in The Temple Bar pub such as Lad Lane, The Sullivan Brothers, Clare Malone from The Commitments, Dave Browne from Picturehouse, Phelim Drew, Francie Conway, Clare Peelo, Steven Carroll, Dave Lewis, Sharon O’Brien, and Jenny Duffy.
