Brisbane quartet Cub Sport have released their self-titled third album ahead of their show Upstairs in Whelan’s this Valentine’s Day. The album is a synthpop celebration of the liberation and sense of self frontman Tim Nelson experienced once he openly admitted he was in love with bandmate Sam Netterfield.
The journey from closeted love affair to out and proud relationship will no doubt resonate with many people around the world and offer hope and encouragement to those going true similar circumstances in their personal life. The album’s centrepiece is Party Pill which recounts the Nelson and Netterfields initial flirtation as teenagers.
The album’s opening track Unwinding Myself, is a haunting acapella which Tim Nelson recorded spontaneously during the recording sessions for the band’s previous album ‘Bats’. Unwinding Myself works perfectly as a conduit between the accepting yourself vibes of ‘Bats’ to the enjoy yourself mantra of ‘Cub Sport’.
It’s fitting then, that the high romance contained within the album and the pure sense of joy it emits will be on offer on St. Valentine’s Day when the Australian act come to Whelan’s.
Cub Sport play Upstairs at Whelan’s on February 14th. Tickets €15.62.
