Sonic Vigil, a regular feature of Cork’s experimental music scene going back to 2005, will this year expand to ‘In Your Own Time and Place’, a three-day mini festival of improvisation, film, and sonic art, produced by a team of local artists headed by composer Karen Power. Running 14-16 September, this will see performances in Cork Opera House and The Guesthouse.

The festival opens with the Irish premiere screening of Deep Listening: The Story of Pauline Oliveros, a new film by Daniel Weintraub on composer/improvisor/philosopher Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), a central figure in experimental and electronic music. This will be followed by a concert by the Quiet Music Ensemble, performing music by Irish and international composers including Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri, Anna Murray, Irene Murphy, and the world premiere of a new work by dancer Inma Pavon. September 15 sees duo The Quiet Club joined by saxophonist Cathal Roche for a concert in The Guesthouse.

At the heart of this series of events is the eleventh Sonic Vigil, which runs from from 12 Noon on 16 September, a marathon of improvisation, movement, film, and sound art. This year, the Vigil features 23 performers, including celebrated improviser and music writer David Toop, with artists performing across all three floors of the foyer area of Cork Opera House. The random timetable will allow the soundscape to continually evolve throughout the building, with audiences free to come and go and walk freely amongst the performers throughout the six-hour event.
